Flickety flick Feb 19 2006
Monster Flickr photo update this evening. Got some photos from this weekend’s decorating we’ve been doing - a hard two days work, but it was worth it. Plenty more work to do too! Also, some photos from last weeks inaugural Uncle Seven band practice. Just a few weeks old, I’m really pumped about being in a band again - more information at our PureVolume site, and soon we’ll launch our band website at uncleseven.co.uk.
Also, I’ve stuck a load of random miscellaneous pics up there, mainly from my camera phone. Some were taken last year, some were more recent, up to just a few days ago, so enjoy trawling through them :-)

Playstation Live? Feb 15 2006
No sooner did I post about my hunch that all our PS3 related questions would be answered at E3 (a mere three months away), than a story pops up with a rumour that the release for the console in both Japan, and North America, could possibly be September! The best bit about that story however is the rumour of a Sony backed subscription gaming service for the Playstation brand (supposedly working with both PS3 and PSP). Dubbed Playstation HUB, it’d be serious competition for XBox Live, and is just another reason why the PS3 looks like it’ll be a far superior console to the 360. And of course with Sony’s huge market share in other areas of media, it wouldn’t surprise me to see the ability to download songs by Sony artists, or movies backed by Sony/Columbia pictures, through the PS HUB system. We’ll know shortly I guess, and we should know all the details for sure by the END of E3 ;-)

Updates n shit Feb 15 2006
I’ve made a few updates to the blog software that rocks this very blog, Scrawl. I fixed up some of the RPC pings it makes when a post is added or updated. That now uses the xFramework XML-RPC implementation, and so is a lot more stable, faster, and cleaner.
Coming up over the next few days, I’m working on fixing categories, so you’ll be able to filter the posts by a specific category, aswell as getting the feed for just one topic or category (if your only interested in when I jabber on about mono, for instance). Also, you may have noticed a few changes involving Technorati tags on the site. I signed up for a free account, and claimed my blog, so I don’t really have a need for the “Technorati tags” section at the bottom of the blog anymore - this will go over the next few days too. The embedded Technorati script at the bottom of the page that links back to my Technorati profile is quite clever though, so I’ll be playing with that. I’m also using features within Performancing (where I blog from nowadays) to automagically work me some Technorati tags for each individual post, which is also very cool.
Finally, I plan to finally jazz up my blog, by playing with the styles etc, and I also have a few other plans for features I want to get done. Watch this space!

Super Sonic Feb 13 2006
I can’t believe I let this slip me by. Sonic the Hedgehog always was, and obviously now still is, awesome. Can’t wait. And here, from the same site, about the same sort of time last year, some details about Metal Gear Solid 4 - another superb franchise, albeit a bit more recent, but with this outing shaping up to be an absolute classic. Was obviously busy that month, because last PS3 footage I saw was from last year’s E3 :-)
From the same site again, this time from the last few days, one of the most in-depth hands-on looks at Sony’s Playstation 3 I’ve seen so far. Sony have been very “hush hush” about it to date, and this contains a fair bit of detail I hadn’t seen anywhere else. I would hazard a guess however and say everyone should be looking forward to E3 in May, because I think all the questions, from 1080p HD output, to pricing, to the final controller and case designs, will be answered, aswell as the biggie - when?
metaWeblog.getCategories Feb 11 2006
Wahoo, finally got “metaWeblog.getCategories” working, meaning that now Performancing can see all of my tags configured on Scrawl when I’m making a post! To celebrate, this is getting tagged with all of my currently configured tags ;-)
Long, but distinguished Feb 11 2006
Man, Top Gun is a fucking class film. That is all.
Beta testing madness Feb 8 2006
So I’ve been testing both RF Online and DDO last few days, and they are both very impressive games. I’ve already pre-ordered RFO (which gave me a beta test key a week or two ago), so I’ll be playing that for at least a little while, but I’m also quite tempted to get DDO pre-ordered too, as I think I will quite enjoy that when it comes out. They are really different games, but both are really well done. In RFO’s case, it’s actually quite an old game as it first came out in Korea a while ago, and has since been released in other countries in the Far East, with it finally making the jump over to this neck of the woods only recently thanks to Codemasters. It definitely feels like what FFXI should have been, with the decent mix of sci-fi and fantasy that always signified the Final Fantasy series, while retaining its own distinct feel.
As for DDO, it’s a more traditional MMORPG in as much as it can be compared to EQ2, DAoC etc, however it’s ironic that it’s backend, the ruleset it’s based on, could be considered the grandfather of all the fantasy MMORPG’s played today - Dungeons and Dragons. From the table-top roleplaying game, all the way to classic PC games such as Baldur’s Gate, and Neverwinter Nights (a sequel for which is in production at the minute, and looking fantastic), D&D was the basis for them all. And so finally getting to play an MMORPG based on those rules, with familiar monsters, spells and character types, is really exciting. The fact that the game is incredibly well designed, and looks beautiful, is a bonus. And again, it’s Codemasters who are handling distribution over here in the UK, so a big hand to them.
Although this is supposedly the beta-testing phase, most of the serious bug hunting has already been done (both games are in phase2/phase3 of testing now), and as such, despite the occasional server downtimes or reboots, it’s pretty plain sailing, and just gives players the chance to try out the game ahead of its release. I think you can count me down as a regular in both games come their release towards the end of this month (and possibly early March in DDO’s case).
AJAXificationalised Feb 8 2006
I really think I should spend some time hacking on some AJAX stuff, and get to grips with how it might be useful. The Dojo Toolkit looks like it might be the JavaScript library/framework I need to get started, as it seems to be an incredibly comprehensive suite of interesting stuff, that can be tailored to exactly what I might need. That, combined with this awesome article I found, seems like it’ll give me a nice framework in writing my own useful AJAX framework that I can extend for alsorts of applications. With the magic powers of rapid web application development that Ruby on Rails has recently brought me, I hope to stick something rather competent together fairly soonish. Time to get playing. On a similar note, I’ve continued my journey with Rails, and I hope to stick the second part of my experiences using Ruby and Ruby on Rails up on the ‘Vine soon.
Catch up time Feb 8 2006
Ok so I’ve been busy with a load of stuff that’s stopped me posting regularly recently, but I’ve got a number of cool things I want to blog, so I’m going to try and get round to doing them all over the next day or two. Enjoy!
